Our self-contained baby unit provides a safe, calm and natural environment for our smallest children. By providing open-ended play, the children can express themselves freely, enhancing their imagination and ability make their own decisions, while developing their creativity.
The children have access to four rooms which provide opportunities for learning and development. The main playroom enables the children to actively explore and the second playroom provides a calm space for meals and messy play. There is a also a sleep room and small sensory room which is often turned into soft play where the babies can develop their large motor skills and also a sleep room. The baby room also has access to the nursery garden along with walks in the local community.
Our self-contained Toddler room supports a child’s natural desire to be independent. The experienced practitioners actively promote this desire by gently supporting with self-care, such as toilet training. The children’s interests are at the forefront of the activities on offer, with messy play being a particular favourite. The room is equipped with natural and opened resources to
support children’s curiosity. The Practitioners skilfully set up invitations to play and support the children’s growing imagination, seeing awe and wonder in the world.
Our Preschool room actively supports children’s development in preparation for school by offering school readiness activities, such as ‘Fun Phonics’ and PE lessons to actively encourage children to become lifelong learners. To inspire the children’s natural curiosity and appreciation for the outdoors, the preschool children actively take part in ‘The Nature Detectives Programme’. The children benefit from the free flow approach, enabling them to make a meaningful connection with the outdoors, contributing to their emotional and physical development along with understating of the natural world and how this keeps us healthy.
Our outdoor space is used as an extension to the indoor areas of the nursery. The outdoor space uses predominately open-ended and real-life resources, enabling the children to build and climb on self-made balancing beams, structures and tunnels, working together to solve problems and use their imagination. The nursery also utilises the fantastic countryside around the village, taking the children to the river to race “Pooh sticks” off the bridge, picking wild blackberries and exploring the woods and fields.
Our highly experienced chief provides delicious and nutritious home-cooked meals promoting good eating habits and a healthy attitude towards food for life. Carols recipe book is requested regularly by the parents. The team sit with children to enjoy meals and to promote conversation, making mealtimes very sociable.
Our seasonal rotated menus receive input from the children, ensuing that they are offered not only tasty and nutritious meals, but firm favourites and new options are offered.

I’m Claire Hackett the Nursery Manager at Play Out Steeple Bumpstead.
Having worked in Day Nurseries for 19 years I have a wealth of experience that I use to make sure every child at Play Out is able to thrive, have fun and be safe.
I love outside adventurous play and using a variety of play styles within the setting to make sure we give our children the best start. I am passionate about partnership with parents and am always happy to offer support to parents.
I have worked at Steeple Bumpstead since 2015 starting as the Pre-school leader. I was promoted to Nursery Manager in February 2019. I hold a Level 4 Cache qualification in Childcare and Education as well as a Level 3 in Special Educational Needs and I’m a mum to a very active 3-year-old.
My name is Donna Cope and I am the Deputy manager at Play Out Steeple Bumpstead. I have worked in the childcare profession for over 20 years. Over the years I have worked in nurseries but also as a private nanny which took me to lots of different places and gave me lots of new first experiences.
I love that every day is different and although you may think you have learnt everything there is to know about childcare something comes along to remind you that every day is a new learning opportunity. When I get spare time I love to read, explore all the National Trust has to offer and have just found a love of all things crochet.
The nursery provides a flexible booking option for families, enabling our services to meet your needs. Parents have the option to book their children into the nursery in hourly slots, meaning that parents pay for what they need rather than being tied into set booking patterns, with hours not being needed or used.
Our nursery offers the 30 hours funded sessions for children the term following their third birthday.

Parents are very happy with the care their children receive. They say their children make good progress in their development and would not consider sending them anywhere else.
